Can A.I. Share The World With Us?

The average person understands that Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is going to take many jobs in the field of technology, without considering anything else. However, saying that A.I. will take over the world or that it will take all of our jobs is a bit far fetched considering that A.I. isn’t even close to being fully developed. Truth be told, A.I. is actually very helpful as of right now, but that doesn’t mean there is no room for problems to occur in the near future.

When considering the future of AI, we tend to think about a smart world that helps in many different areas helping to eliminate errors in daily practice and increasing efficiency. We tend to think of robots doing tasks for us, self-driving cars, or maybe even a robot friend that acts and learns just like a human would. They are there to assist us in everyday activities and they help to make our lives more efficient increasing the pace of our ever-changing world.

A.I. and Jobs

Humans once focused on being able to survive, but as time has passed, humans needed to do more than just survive. The focus shifted from surviving to intellectual activities. This caused the development of money to be able to exchange good and services, but this has also created disparities. Speculations suggest that there will be a greater gap in the economy due to these machines capable of replacing humans. This introduces the ethical problem of the distribution of wealth between humans. A.I. would likely serve a cheaper alternative to humans for labor, once it is fully capable of doing human processes on its own, thus allowing business leaders to profit even more while ordinary citizens lose jobs, and ultimately, money.

This displaces the demographic and requires people to pursue more intellectual pursuits forcefully. For those with sufficient education, this wouldn’t be too much of a problem. This is also not a problem since it has been proven that humans are getting smarter and smarter as generations pass as stated by the Flynn Effect. In a sense, A.I. won’t have much of an effect on wealth and jobs for the next 10 or so years, but even further into the future, and we may have a problem in our hands. In this Forbes article, “Artificial Intelligence To Create 58 Million New Jobs By 2022, Says Report,” Amit Chowdhry, the author, mentions that a recent report by the World Economic Forum suggests that while many companies plan on using more and more robots to do work, they will ensure that a set amount of their workforce remains humans. The forum also mentions that companies aren’t willing to give up jobs to A.I. that require human intelligence, personality, or, as the forum mentions, “human skills.”

But what happens once A.I. is capable of imitating human personalities or reach the same level of intelligence as humans? Probably the more important question is, when? When will A.I. reach human intelligence or perform better than humans? A study done by researchers from Yale and Oxford that took the predictions from 100s of industrial leaders and intellectuals suggests that A.I. will be able to do most, if not all, tasks better than humans, thus making humans more of a liability than a benefit. The same predictions suggest that all human jobs will be replaced by 2136, well beyond our current generation, but not so far in the grand scheme of things.

A.I. and Security

We considered the uses of A.I., but what about who controls it? Software today is getting safer and safer, but people are still trying to find ways to hack and steal information. Hacking A.I. can make it possible to remotely access information of another company or organization and use that as an advantage. This makes people question the ethics of security. Many people argue that employing people is more secure since they can only willingly give information, but robots can get hacked. Security is evolving very quickly such as in the case of Google and Apple. These companies have made advances to be able to stop hackers assuring people that this phenomenon will be harder. This is due to the many talented and experienced people that are being hired since people are learning to code at an earlier age. A.I. is also getting smart enough to be able to correct its own flaws to prevent being hacked making it harder for hackers to get access to the system.
